Every spring, the same thing happens. The snow melts, you give your car a wash, and suddenly you're seeing dents and dings that weren't there — or maybe they were, buried under road salt and slush all winter. Either way, Ontario winters are hard on vehicles, and spring is the perfect time to deal with the damage before it gets worse.
I'm Tyler DeCarlo, and I run Premium Dent Repair — a mobile paintless dent repair service based out of Peterborough, serving Durham Region, Northumberland County, Kawartha Lakes, and the surrounding area. Every spring I see a big uptick in calls, and most of them are about the same types of damage. Here's what to look for, what's fixable, and what to do about it.
Why Winter Is So Brutal on Your Car's Body
It's not just the cold. It's the combination of factors that makes winter in Ontario uniquely damaging:
- Parking lot chaos. Ice and snow make it harder to see lines, judge distance, and control a door swinging open in the wind. Door dings spike in winter.
- Frozen doors. When a door is frozen slightly open and someone forces it, or when ice shifts under pressure, the metal takes the hit. You end up with dents along door edges and body lines.
- Road debris. Salt trucks and gravel trucks leave a trail of rocks and debris. At highway speed, that's enough to dimple sheet metal.
- Snow banks and barriers. Parking near snow banks means bumping into things you can't fully see. It happens to everyone.
- Late-season hail. Southern Ontario gets surprise hail events in October and November. If your vehicle was outside, it may have taken more hits than you realize.

What to Check on Your Vehicle This Spring
Door Edges and Door Panels
Walk around your vehicle in good natural light — ideally with the sun at a low angle so it rakes across the panels. Door edges are the most common place for winter dings. Look for small round dents along the outer door skin, and check the edges where the door would contact another car or a post.
Front Hood and Roof
These panels catch the most road debris. Tiny dimples from rocks and gravel often go unnoticed until you look at the right angle. On the roof, also check for any hail damage from last fall — a cluster of small, shallow dents across a large area is a telltale sign.
Rear Quarter Panels and Bumper Surrounds
Snow bank bumps show up here most often. These are typically low-speed impacts — a gentle push into a snow bank that didn't feel like much at the time but left a dent in the quarter panel or cracked/pushed the bumper trim.
Trunk Lid
Often overlooked. The trunk lid catches debris from behind and can accumulate small dents over a full winter of highway driving. Check it in good light with the same raking-sun technique.
Why Spring Is the Best Time to Book a PDR Repair
Beyond the obvious reason of finally being able to see the damage clearly, there are a few practical reasons why spring is the ideal window:
Metal Behaviour in Warm Weather
Cold metal is more brittle and less workable. Paintless dent repair involves carefully massaging the metal back to its original shape from behind — a process that goes more smoothly when the panel is at a reasonable temperature. Spring and summer give the best conditions for clean, precise results.
Before the Rust Starts
Most PDR repairs don't involve paint damage. But if the dent has cracked or chipped the paint — especially along a sharp door edge — exposed bare metal will start to rust once the warm, wet spring weather arrives. Fixing it now prevents a $200 dent from turning into a $1,500 rust repair at a body shop later.
Lease Returns in the Fall
If your lease is up in the next 6–12 months, spring is the time to get ahead of it. Lease-end inspections catch everything, and dealerships charge retail body shop rates for any damage they find. Getting it fixed now through PDR costs a fraction of what it would cost at return — and you have time to deal with it without the pressure of a deadline.
What PDR Can and Can't Fix
Paintless dent repair works on a wide range of dents, but it's not magic. Here's an honest breakdown:
Excellent candidates for PDR
- Door dings and parking lot dents
- Hail damage (shallow dimples across large areas)
- Dents where the paint is fully intact
- Round or smooth dents without sharp creases
- Dents on accessible panels (doors, hood, trunk, roof, fenders)
More difficult or not repairable by PDR alone
- Dents with broken or cracked paint (may need touch-up after PDR)
- Sharp creases or fold lines through the dent
- Damage near panel edges where there's no room to access from behind
- Very large or deep impacts where the metal is stretched significantly
- Structural damage (that's a body shop job)
